Prospect’s Amy Varner doesn’t get it herself –- some days the Knights are an average softball team and on others they can play with anyone in the state.

On Monday, they had the latter sort of a day.

Visiting Prospect (14-8, 8-4) kept its hopes for a division title alive by defeating No. 16 Elk Grove 3-0 in a Mid-Suburban League East matchup.

The Grenadiers (23-4, 10-3) hold a one-game lead with three games left on their conference schedule.

"Today, we wanted revenge," Varner said. "Elk Grove beat us on our field. We wanted to do the same to them. We had to prove to ourselves we could beat them."

Varner did her part. In a three-run fourth inning, she tripled and drove in two runs with a deep shot to right field.

Even with a three-run lead, Prospect was on edge all afternoon as Elk Grove’s offense tested the Knights almost every inning.

Like a magician, Prospect starter Sheri Weidner and her defense found their way out of each close situation.

The Grenadiers had two on with no outs in the second inning, bases loaded and one out in the third and left two on in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. All together, they left 12 on base.

"We really stepped it up," Varner said. "We got out of so many situations. We really earned it today."

On the other side, Elk Grove felt like it had really given it away.

"Everyone was hitting," Elk Grove’s Kayla Mahoney said. "We just didn’t hit at the right time and didn’t hit together."

Nikki Goranson (2-for-4) and Stephanie Polce (2-for-4) led Elk Grove.

"This was a real game,” Prospect coach Brenda Cognac-Martin said. “It was always intense. There was action always happening.”
