Coming into Saturday’s Class 3A Trinity Sectional final against Elmwood Park, the host Blazers had one thing on their mind: revenge.
After losing last year’s sectional final 8-3, they got it in a big way, winning the first sectional championship in program history by defeating their neighborhood rivals 12-4.
Both teams provided some fireworks in the second, with the Tigers (24-15) scoring four runs on three hits and the Blazers (23-15) three on four hits. Vivi Castellanos’ home run started the rally for the home team.
“I always have confidence in my team and knew they would pull through,” said Emma Leigh-Strock, who picked up the win. “We’ve fallen behind so many times, but knew that we could come back and stayed calm.”
Trinity exploited the wildness of Elmwood Park freshman pitcher Katelyn Jakobsen for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leading 6-3, the Blazers strung together five hits and were aided by two Tiger errors.
Taylor Golden went 2-for-2 for Trinity and scored three runs.
