A year from now, Barrington junior Mary Olandese may not be so bold, but on Thursday she was, and it made all the difference.
In the bottom the seventh in a scoreless tie with Lake Zurich in the Class 4A Barrington Sectional semifinals, Olandese, who spent most of the season on junior varsity, pinch-ran for Kelsey Kazmier, who singled.
On the third pitch to teammate Colleen Shandley, Olandese broke for second, the throw sailed into center field and without thinking she took off for third. It wasn’t an action Barrington coach Perry Peterson would have recommended, but it worked out as she d arrived just before the ball despite not sliding and nearly running past the base.
“I got back,” she said. “Thank God.”
Shortly thereafter, Lindsey Dulla knocked in Olandese with a shot back to the pitcher that ricocheted into the infield and provided the No. 2 Fillies (33-3) with a 1-0 win over Lake Zurich (28-8).
“Those are the type of plays she’s used to making at the JV level,” said Peterson of Olandese. “She broke for third without hesitating to her credit. You’ll hear a lot from Mary as a senior. Today, she’s focusing on running the bases.”
Barrington had plenty of opportunities before that. The Fillies left seven runners on base through the first six innings. Four times, they had runners in scoring position with one out or less.
Fillies pitcher Kim Cygan (29-3) held the Lake Zurich off as she allowed three hits and no runs, struck out seven and walked one.
Shandley (3-for-4) and Nora Logue (2-for-3) contributed for Barrington. Kyra Boyer, Megan Mattera and Kaitlin Beaver each had hit for Lake Zurich.
