Chris Williams threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes to lead host Zion-Benton past winless Mundelein 22-7 in North Suburban Conference Lake Division football action on Friday night.

The Zee-Bees (3-5) broke a 7-7 tie when Williams hooked up with Reid Ruckebeil for a 2-yard score, and then clinched the win with Williams’ 8-yard touchdown pass to Carlton Reynolds.

In the final minutes, Hannah Magiera booted a 23-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

Zion scored first on a 65-yard run by Sean Schinkel, and Mundelein (0-8) tied it on L.D. Frison’s 3-yard scoring run on the first play of the second quarter.

Zion will finish its season next Friday against Lake Zurich.

Zee-Bee coach Bob Strickland was thrilled to see a solid effort pay off with a win.

“I’m so proud of how we responded and finally got it done,” the coach said. “It’s been a rough year with injuries. We’ve had to keep moving people around.”

Zion lost starting quarterback Javiarius Amos-Mays (transfered to another school) after three games, and then lost star running back/backup quarterback Alex Pasiewicz to a broken leg one week later.

“In their stead, starting safety Williams moved under center and finally looked comfortable in the pocket, completeing 7-of-11 for 117 yards and 2 scores with 0 picks.”

“Chris has done a great job stepping up at quarterback,” said Strickland. “Tonight, he did a great job finding the open receiver and getting us into the end zone.”

Schinkel, who replaced Pasiewicz, carried the ball 25 times for 142 yards and the team’s first score.
