Football: Fenger advances past Young in Public League playoffs

Updated: November 4, 2011 9:31PM

Fenger has been the surprise team in the Public League all season. Despite losing its coach Cassius Chambers to a controversy that has yet to be resolved, the Titans (7-4) advanced to the semifinals of the Public League playoffs with a 41-0 victory over Young.

Tavin Allen scored three touchdowns on runs of two, eight, and 56 yards and finished with nine carries for 128 yards. Maalik Terril caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darrion Boone and a scored on a 12-yard run. Boone finished off the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Terril, Allen and Maalik Harlan each had an interception for the Titans’ defense.

As Allen walked off the field he said it was a special moment for the team.

“We have been through a lot this season and it means a lot for us to get this far in the playoffs,” said Allen. “None of us have ever played a game in November in our careers. This is a first.”

Assistant coach Chuck Chambers, Jr., who is filling for his brother, said he is proud of the team’s effort. “They continue to impress us with how hard they are working. With the limited amount of time that we have had to practice together they have kept their focus and intensity up. Our offense was really working and the defensive effort never allowed them to get going.”

Young (5-5) coach Tim Franken said he was surprised at how his team was handled.

“We thought we were in a very good position and were ready for the game. Give them all the credit. They have a lot of good athletes and they showed that they wanted it more than we did,” said Franken.
