Curie strikes late to top Young

After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, Curie had to score late to secure a 34-17 Red Bird victory against Young Friday at Rockne.

‘‘When you’re playing a decent team, you can’t let up,’’ said Curie quarterback Jibreel Jackson, who threw for one touchdown and ran in another. ‘‘And Young is a good team.’’

Jackson’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Poindexter midway through the fourth quarter gave the Condors (5-2, 3-1) a 27-17 lead.

Jackson’s one-yard touchdown run ended the scoring.

Kevonta McIntyre (16 carries, 94 yards, two touchdowns) scored on a five-yard run, and Eric Brooks had a 55-yard touchdown run to stake Curie to a 14-0 lead.

After Young running back Barrett Morrissette scored on a 10-yard run to cut the lead to 14-7, McIntyre added a nine-yard touchdown run for a 20-7 Curie advantage.

The Dolphins (3-4, 2-2) closed to 20-17 when Morrissette (12 carries, 57 yards) scored on a five-yard run with 7:08 to play in the third quarter.

‘‘I take the blame for our team’s soft play,’’ McIntyre said. ‘‘The team feeds off of me, and I need to give them more energy.’’
