Boys Basketball: Orr upsets short-handed Young

Jamal McDowell never stopped to think of it as an upset. “We’re supposed to win,” the Orr point guard said.

He scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and recorded six assists and five rebounds as the host Spartans ripped an injury-depleted No. 2 Young 45-29 Wednesday.

Young played without 6-8 foward Tommy Hamilton Jr., out with a meniscus injury, and forward Jermaine Morgan (ankle) and shooter Jordan Smith (ankle).

The Dolphins never matched the Spartans’ intensity. Deshawn King nailed two three-pointers and scored eight consecutive points as Orr (2-1, 1-0 Red-West) stunned Young with a 13-1 start.

King scored all 14 of his game-high total in the first half and Marquise Pryor limited Young’s Jahlil Okafor to just nine points.

“My shots weren’t falling in the first half, and so I knew I had to get to the basket,” McDowell said.

McDowell hit a runner in the lane off glass and ended the third quarter with a 19-footer for a 40-24 Orr advantage.

Even though the Spartans failed to score in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, Young (1-1, 0-1) never crept any closer.

Miles Reynolds added seven points for the Dolphins.
