Whatever problems Young had at the beginning of the season seem to be getting righted towards the end of the season.

Young followed up Tuesday’s buzzer-beater over North Lawndale with a convincing 45-29 victory over visiting Crane Thursday night.

“Any victory in the Red-West is a good victory,” said Young coach Tyrone Slaughter “We are work in progress and our goal is to continuously improve.”

With the score 5-4 favoring Crane (15-6, 5-4) after the first quarter, there was not much scoring in the second either as Young (12-7, 7-2) claimed a 14-12 lead at half.

The third quarter was going in the same direction until sophomore guard Miles Reynolds drained back-to-back three pointers to give Young its largest lead, 27-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Four free throws by Reynolds and a dunk by Nate Brooks pushed the lead to 35-22 with five minutes remaining in the game.

The Dolphins closed it out by shooting 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Reynolds was the lone Young player in double figures with 15 points. Jahlil Okafor scored nine points and had a game-high nine rebounds. Jordan Smith also scored eight points.

“We did what we wanted to do in the first half,” Crane coach Chris Head said. “Shorten the game and value every possession in the second half we forgot what had us in the game.”

Chris Dailey led the Cougars with 12 points. Khailfani Nichols followed with nine

The win makes it a four-way tie for first place in the Red-West between Orr, Marshall, Farragut and Young with each team posting a 7-2 conference record.
