Benet's early lead too much for York
Updated: March 22, 2011 4:42PM
One of the Benet's goals is to build up a big lead
to
make sure that every member of the team gets into the game.
The host Redwings had one of those nights
Thursday as they built up a 20-plus lead in the third quarter and
eventually
went on to top York 57-40 on opening night of the Naperville North/Benet
Holiday
Tournament.
"At halftime we talk about how we can build up a lead and
get everyone to play," said Danielle Canulli, who led the Benet scoring with 14
points.
"In the first half we did our best to be patient on offense
and
we got the open look," said Sidney Prasse, who finished the game with 13
points
including three from beyond the arc.
Benet (8-4) controlled the game from the beginning, as it
build
up a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, holding the Dukes to only two
field goals.
It got worse for the Dukes in the second quarter as Benet
made
it 35-16.
After the Redwings increased the lead to 23 in the third
quarter, coach Peter Paul put in a team of reserves and York immediately cut
into the lead with an 11-3 run.
But the Redwings righted the ship and finished off with a
comfortable margin.
"We have a lot of weapons," said Canulli, who led the team's
scoring with 14. "In the first half tonight it was Sidney who was hitting.
But
we took care of the ball tonight, and made a lot of good passes."
"We're very pleased with the effort," said Paul. "We had few
turnovers. We shot the ball well and we pressured them a little, forcing
them to
do some things that they didn't like to do."
Mary Colon led the Dukes with 15 points and Nicole Brown
scored
11.
"It didn't seem like we were ready to play tonight," said
York
coach Jason Reinecke. "We came out flat and they were hitting a lot of their
shots. We were tentative, timid, and you can't play like that against a good
team like Benet. I'm glad we fought back in the second half."
Friday, Benet faces Geneva who topped Wheaton Warrenville
South
50-46 on Thursday behind 18 points by Ashley Santos and 10 by Kat Yelle.
The Viking led 27-24 at the half and came out hot in the
third
quarter to build up a 35-24 cushion in the opening minutes.
But the Tigers stayed tough and battled their way back into
the
game.
Hannah Credille scored 10 for the Tigers.
