WW South too much for Trevians

Wheaton Warrenville South came into its game against New Trier on Thursday focused on improving its defense, which had allowed nine goals in the first three games. But it was the Tiger's offense that made an immediate impact.
Danny Burns scored his sixth goal of the season 46 seconds into the first half and Michael Kania added a headed goal 17 minutes later to lead WW South to a 2-1 upset of the No. 4 Trevians at the Barrington tournament.
"It was a good way to start the game," said George Doran, who assisted on the opening score. "Transition is something we work on a lot in practice. I was able to get the ball out to [Burns] and he was able to finish like normal. It's getting to be a habit for him."
The Tigers (2-1-1) also improved on their uncharacteristically sub-par defensive record, with Joseph Holtz, Kania, Timothy Reinders (save) and Joshua Nix (save) helping to limit New Trier (1-2-2).
"Typically we set goals with our benchmarks being giving up only nine or 11 goals in a season let alone the first three matches," Tigers coach Guy Callipari said. "We've made mistakes in the early games this season and have been punished for them, but improved on that today."
Freshman Jeff Farina scored on a determined solo-effort, breaking down the right wing and showing patience before sneaking his shot inside the near post 4:40 into the second half to pull the Trevians within 2-1.
"[Farina's] possession and poise on the ball is many years his senior," saidNew Trierassistant coach Wes Molyneaux, who has been filling insince head coach Craig Fairbairn had minor surgery. "He sees the game well, he knows when to push it and when to hold and that's a lot to ask from a freshman. He's doing a phenomenal job."
The Trevians were without senior forward Alex Johnson-Bice, who suffered a broken leg against Rockford Boylan on Tuesday. He is expect to miss at least the next six-to-eight weeks.
