The only real reason for sticking around during the second half of the Mid-Suburban East conference game between Buffalo Grove and Wheeling was to see if a long-standing record for the most three pointers in a game for the Bison would stand.

Jason Stronjinc (1992-’93) held the record with seven. At the half, with his team up 44-10, junior Luke Potnick was within three of tying it.

Potnick had 14 of his 18 points at the break, and Rich Zirngibl had 15 of his 18 as the Bison (3-6, 1-2) went on to an easy 82-40 win over the Wildcats (0-9, 0-3).

The record? Potnick was 0-for-1 from three in the second half after sitting with the rest of the starters most of the last 12 minutes.

“All of us came out really ready to play and that was our main focus during practice,” said Potnick, who rolled his ankle and didn’t play last Saturday in the loss to Conant. “We were up and we got a bunch of guys in to play so it was good.”

The Wildcats didn’t reach double figures until under 1-minute left in the first half, in which they had just five field goals. Junior Scottie Bertrand led the Wildcats with 10 points off the bench.

“We didn’t answer the bell, we looked like a scared basketball team tonight,” Wheeling coach John Clancy said. “The thing that is disappointing is we had played our league-leader Prospect to a three-point game.

“The effort we gave tonight was inexcusable.”

Sam Wacker, a 6-foot-7 senior, finished with 12 points and six rebounds in two-and-a-half quarters of action. Sophomore Colin Inlow scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Bison.

“We played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” Buffalo Grove coach Ryan O’Conner said. “I was really happy with the effort we gave; we’ve been struggling up until now.”
