Wheeler's Jones steps down

Updated: March 28, 2011 9:38AM

Wheeler coach Mike Jones resigned suddenly Thursday afternoon, citing health issues, according to Wheeler athletic director Randy Stelter.

Jones, 43, is one year removed from leading the Bearcats to the state title. His record of 130-76 equals the third-highest winning percentage among active coaches in the state. Mike Hackett of Munster has the highest percentage.

Stelter said he was shocked when Jones came in and gave him the news.

"I was not expecting it all," he said.

Asked if a leave of absence was put on the table, Stelter said he "tried everything" to get him to reconsider.

Jones told Stelter that he needed to "rethink his health" and spend more time with his two kids.

"That's what is important to him now," Stelter said.

Stelter said the opening for the position was posted today and that applications will be taken until April 8.

Jones was not at school Friday and he did not return a phone call seeking comment.
