Guerin came out hot and maintained their level of play throughout the game as it they earned a 52-31 home victory over Wheaton Academy in a Suburban Christian Gold matchup on Friday night in River Grove.
Sophomore center Sara Brodner and senior guard Desi Irizarry led a balanced Gator offense with nine points each.
Senior forward Sarah Turlan posted seven points while senior guard Eryn Fallon and junior center Molly Campbell each added six in the victory.
"We looked like Guerin Prep," said Guerin coach Johnnie Gage. "It seemed like the girls got back happy and finally said, let's play together. They weren't out trying to achieve personal goals. You can tell how the score was all balanced out."
The Gators (14-8, 3-3) built a 28-12 lead by halftime with solid defense and rebounding. Brodner had some early foul trouble and Campbell came in at her spot and did well late in the first half.
They worked the offensive glass well as Brodner, Campbell, Fallon, and senior forward Anna Kross had put-back baskets.
"Somebody must have told (Molly) that we'd give her a most valuable player award for this game," said Gage. "She is the definitely fastest big person on the team, and just with her speed up and down the court and unselfish ways she was able to follow up and be at the right place at the right time."
Wheaton Academy (7-13, 3-6) wasn't able to keep up with the Gators on the night despite junior guard Allison Witt's game-high 11 points. Junior guard Kelly Nemec scored eight points, but the Warriors could never put a run together that threatened the home team in losing their fifth straight.
