Boys Basketball: Wheaton Academy blows by Aurora Central

Down by five points early in Wednesday’s Suburban Christian game against Aurora Central Catholic, Wheaton Academy’s boys basketball team had to get things going.
In doing so, Warriors coach Paul Ferguson sounded more like an old school football coach than a basketball coach.
“The key to his game was that we got our running game going,” Ferguson said.
It wasn’t like the Warriors were running the Wing-T; it was more like running the Chargers out of the gym.
The Warriors ended the first half with a debilitating 24-5 run to coast to a 71-53 win, their third straight win as they head into the Glenbard West tournament next week.
“We wanted to run from the get-go,” Wheaton Academy forward Cameron Harvey said. “I think we started out a little slow, but once we picked it up and got our feet under us, I think the intensity really picked up.”
Harvey started the run with a pull-up jumper and a three-pointer, but after that, it was all Wheaton Academy getting out in transition that buried the Chargers (3-6, 1-3). The Warriors (6-4, 3-1) scored the rest of their points in the half either in the paint or at the free throw line.
ACC, playing without injured star forward Robert DeMyers, was unable to slow the train down.
“The game was over after the second quarter,” ACC coach Nate Drye said. “We lost the game in the second quarter. The game was done. We couldn’t get a big enough run together to fix the damage.”
DeMyers’ absence was evident all over the court. The Chargers, who saw their 14-9 lead early in the second quarter evaporate quickly, did not have one double-digit scorer (Joe Medgyesi led the team with nine points, followed by eight from Mike O’Donnell, who didn’t play a minute in the first half), were outrebounded and did not have a blocked shot, one of DeMyers’ fortes.
Wheaton Academy took full advantage. Harvey led the way with 15 points, but he was flanked by Collin Roy and Gordon Behr, who each added 13 points in the win.
“Glenbard West has a really strong field,” Ferguson said. “We felt like we really hit our stride tonight. This was a good game for us.”
Aurora Central Catholic will make its debut at the East Aurora tournament next week.
