In their previous meeting against West Chicago, Naperville North was caught a little off guard by the underdog Wildcats and escaped with only a one-point victory.
They weren’t about to make the same mistake twice.
Fueled by a fast start, the Huskies cruised to a 53-29 victory on Friday night in Naperville.
From the opening whistle North (16-5, 9-1 DVC) found openings in the Wildcats 2-3 zone and went on a 10-0 run. The Huskies went on to outscore the Wildcats 18-7 in the opening quarter. North was paced by Anthony Rehayem’s 11 points.
“I was very happy with the way we started the game tonight. In the past couple of games we have had some slow starts so it was good for us to come out strong,” North coach Jeff Powers said. “They (West Chicago) are a very scrappy team and the team knew that we only beat them by a point the last game. Defensively we really stepped up and allowing only 29 points was big.”
The Huskies were especially strong beyond the arc as 11 of their 18 field goals were three-pointers. Derek Westman opened the game with two straight three-pointers and that forced the Wildcats (5-16, 0-10 DVC) to extend their zone, leaving gaps underneath the basket.
“We had a little size advantage and we tried to beat them underneath when we had a chance,” North forward Mike Keane said. “A win is a win and we want to keep pace for a conference title,”
North dominated the glass, holding a 27-12 rebounding advantage. Keane led North in rebounds with seven and scored seven points.
“They played fast and hard and when they got their chances they stretched their lead,” West Chicago coach Kevin Baldus said. “We need to work harder and make the shots when we get them.”
West Chicago got nine points from Justin Mundt.
