The Waukegan Bulldogs boys volleyball team captured its own six-team invitational tournament Saturday, beating all five opponents it faced.
The key match was the fourth of the day against Wheaton Academy, which the home team won decisively in two games, 25-19, 25-16, clinching the title before the final match of the day was even played.
“It’s our tournament,” said Ed Ricker, who starred for the Bulldogs. “We really wanted to win it.”
Ricker’s performance in the final match of the tourney against West Chicago helped secure a perfect day for the Bulldogs. The two teams went deep into overtime before the Bulldogs finally won 29-27, with Ricker scoring the last three points for the winners on two kills and a game-ending ace.
“I don’t think we ever gave up,” said Waukegan’s Dillon Cappo. “We wanted to play with no regrets.”
According to Bulldog head coach Rachel Wiatrowski, this was the fourth time Waukegan has won its own invite. It was the 10th time the tournament has been held.
