Wauconda High School's volleyball team reached a sweet level Monday night.

The Bulldogs beat host Woodstock 25-15, 29-27 for their 16th straight victory after splitting four matches to start the season.

"It's been really exciting, what our team is doing this year," junior middle Maddie Westman said after popping for a team-best three blocks against the Blue Streaks.

"People are coming up to us in the hallways at school, and are really interested in our team," she added. "The number of fans that come out to watch us at home ... more fans than ever."

The Bulldogs have reached lofty heights this fall, in part, because of height. Westman is 6-foot-3, senior hitter Lauren Mead is 6-2, and senior hitter Becky Breakfield stands 6-0. The team's other middle, junior Stephanie Olson is no shrimp at 5-9.

"We have so many advantages this year; our height is just one of them," Westman said. "We have a really good setter (Kristy Waltenburg), and everybody on defense is willing to hit the floor for digs."

Wauconda senior libero Lisa Aguilar racked up 16 digs on Monday; Olson paced the team in kills (9), and Michelle Waltenburg led the team in aces with three.

Mead pounded an impressive 18 kills in a 26-24, 26-28, 25-19 defeat of Warren on Oct. 1. Westman (10) and Breakfield (9) also stood out as attackers, with Kristy Waltenburg lofting 35 assists. Senior Corinne Feight reached for a team-best 10 digs.

Coach Jonathan Grandt's Bulldogs (18-2, 3-0) compete in this weekend's Crystal Lake Central Invite, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

At Lake Zurich

The Bears are also 18-2 after dismissing Vernon Hills 25-10, 25-12 on Oct. 1.

Senior outside hitter Amber Miehlke struck a team-high seven kills, and classmate Lydia Bauer was 34-of-34 setting with 15 assists.

Junior middle blocker Brittany Murawski contributed a team-high three aces.

LZ (4-0 in the NSC Lake) visits Stevenson at 6 p.m. Friday and hosts a tournament on Saturday.
