Waubonsie Valley powers past East Aurora

East Aurora wasn’t able to defend its home field very well on Friday against Waubonsie Valley. The Warriors scored often on offense, defense and special teams en route to a 68-0 Upstate Eight Valley victory.
Austin Guido had a 5-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. It capped a 10-play, 57-yard drive, which was the only possession longer than four plays for Waubonsie.
Dimitrius Gray (15 yards) and Brandon Malby (2 yards) each grabbed scoring passes from Dylan Warden, and Matt Salvo dashed for a 3-yard TD — all in the first quarter.
“Our offense stated out slowly, but then realized that we had to treat this like any other game. Everyone just picked up the tempo and got fired up on the sideline,” said Salvo, who also had a 52-yard punt return for a score late in the game.
DeMario Webb (15 yards) and Salvo (19 yards) ran for scores in the second quarter. Webb totaled 115 yards on only six carries for the game, and also had a 72-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Zack McCabe ran for 50 yards and a score with a recovered fumble, and Malik Spikener, to end the first half, raced to the end zone on a 55-yard punt return.
East’s highlights were limited, but included two 40-yard kickoff returns by Laquan Brown in the second quarter, and a fumble recovery by Carlos Cabrera in the third.
“The kids played hard, and we executed our bread-and-butter stuff. That was our plan coming in,” said coach Paul Murphy, whose squad is now 7-1 and 4-1 in the UEC. “We were able to stay healthy and play a solid game getting ready for next week. Our goal was to get to seven wins, and now we get to go for eight. If we are 7-2, we might get a home playoff game. If we go 8-1, I know we’ll get one.”
