The "Green Machine" has been playing a good as gold all year.

For the first time since the 2000 season, the Waubonsie Valley football team is 5-1. The Warriors won their fifth straight, 56-21, over Upstate Eight Conference opponent Larkin at Dick Kerner Stadium on Homecoming in Aurora Friday night. This is the best start since Paul Murphy has coached the team.

"It's great," Waubonsie Valley quarterback Matt Schapen said. "We just have to keep pushing forward. We have Neuqua Valley next week, so we just have to keep turning up the intensity."

"They are a good team, and we know that," Larkin coach Mike Scianna added. "We played hard, and we had opportunities...but they have a really good team. That's a team that should do well in the playoffs."

Devon Morgan got things started for the Warriors with his 11-yard run in the first quarter. Larkin (2-4, 1-2) evened the score less than three minutes later, thanks to Brent Cooks' 5-yard run. Waubonsie Valley, however, proceeded to score the next 6 touchdowns.

Austin Guido and Eric Josupait both tallied 89-yard runs back-to-back. Guido did his with 2:56 left in the first and Josupait opened the second quarter scoring with his.

"That was a back-breaker for the other team, that's for sure," said Murphy, whose Warriors are 4-0 in conference play.

The Warriors' next score came from a gorgeous pass from Schapen to Demetrius Gray for a 44-yard touchdown reception. Schapen followed that with a 3-yard run with 2:59 left in the half.

The defense got in on the scoring fun when Austin Lacke scored on an interception after Larkin turned the ball over on the 43 yard line. At the break, Waubonsie Valley led, 42-7.

"Execution...they were challenging us to throw," Murphy said of the big halftime lead. "That was nice."

The Warriors' lone touchdown in the third came courtesy of Jordan Johnson's 10 yard run at the 3:09 mark. The Royals finally broke their drought when Trevor Whitehead scored on a 57-yard run with 36.5 remaining in the quarter.

Waubonsie Valley's final touchdown arrived less than a minute into the fourth. David Brown's 53 yard run made him the eighth different player to score a TD for the Warriors. Cooks scored Larkin's last touchdown on a 3-yard run with 3:58 left in the game.
