After starting the season 0-6, the Waubonsie Valley baseball team found itself with a long climb back to respectability.

But the Warriors have gone 12-5 since, and moved above the .500 mark on the season at 12-11 with a doubleheader sweep of Metea Valley on Saturday. After bashing out an 8-1 win in the opener, Waubonsie took advantage of some Mustang miscues to score twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and squeak out a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.

The Warriors jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, scoring two runs on an error and an RBI from Harry Vickers. The senior third baseman later added a two-run homer and had an RBI single as part of a four-hit game. Vickers also had a hand in the Game 2 comeback when he plated Kyle Limanowski to tie the game at 4-all.

“It’s been tough this year trying to get the bat going,” Vickers said. “It takes time to perfect your swing and (Saturday) I felt focused at the plate and tried to hit the ball and be ready to play.”

Eric Josupait also had a good day at the plate with four hits and three runs for the Warriors, while Tyler Josupait also had four hits and added an RBI. Ryan Vega posted two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Ryan Solomon had two hits and drove in two runs on the day for Metea.

Mike Murphy picked up the win in the opener for Waubonsie, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out nine to improve to 3-3 on the year. Matt Risch stayed unbeaten at 3-0 after tossing six innings to win the second game, with Limanowski coming on for the save.

Billy Sheeren was the hard-luck loser for Metea in the nightcap, taking a 4-3 lead into the sixth before an error and a couple of other mistakes in the field led to two unearned Waubonise runs.

“It’s a tough way to lose,” said Metea Valley coach Craig Tomczak, whose team committed six errors on the day. “Give them credit, they also had three hits in the last inning, but we have had losses where we have made an error or two errors that opened up the game.”
