GARY - Please don't take Washington Township coach Randy Roberts' postgame comments the wrong way.

He was happy with his team's performance in their Porter County Conference opening win over Kouts.

Well, sort of.

Granted, the Senators won 10-1 against a Kouts team that was unbeaten coming into their Railcats High School Baseball Challenge matchup at U.S. Steel Yard.

But there was something the Senators didn't do as well as Roberts liked and said it's something they will work on.

"There were a number of times we could have scored more runs but we let them off the hook," he said. "You've got to score when you have a runner on third and less than two outs."

Scary thought, isn't it? But one thing Roberts doesn't have to sweat is the development of Mustangs pitcher Justin Landgrebe whom Roberts says "was a thower the first few games of the season but (Saturday) started to become a pitcher."

And a good one at that. The lefty pitched a brilliant game for the Senators, going six innings while giving up only one run and two hits and striking out seven.

"I was having problems keeping my focus and keeping the ball down," said Landgrebe, who was the closer in last year's RailCats Challenge win over Lacrosse. "I was just ready to pitch today."

Kouts coach Matt Weston said he thought his Mustangs were ready for Saturday's game.

"We circled this game on the calendar," he said. "We were fired up but their pitcher took us out early."

Landgrebe's teammates wouldn't take long to follow suit. The Senators (4-1, 1-0 PCC) turned a 2-1 second-inning lead into a rout thanks to a balanced offense.

Leadoff man Greg Fadell and ninth-place hitter Ryan Gerberin each drove in a run with singles. They also reached base three times. Bob Ross also had two doubles.

"We're disappointed," said Weston, whose pitching staff gave up nine walks.

"This is a great facility and you really wanted to play your best here. But that's baseball."

Andrew Birky had the only run batted in for Kouts (3-1 0-1) in the second inning.
