Lake Forest too much for Warren

There hasn’t been much going wrong for Lake Forest this season, but the Scouts have been struggling at the service line recently.
A little hard work in practice has seemed to solve that problem, as Lake Forest was tough to handle with the ball in their hand serving in a 25-7, 25-17 victory over visiting Warren on a Dig Pink night to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The win kept the Scouts (13-3 overall) tied for first North Suburban Conference Lake Division with perfect 3-0.
One of the main culprits who had been struggling with her serving was Lake Forest senior star Mary Streidl, who finished with a match-high seven kills from our outside hitter position.
She also used her jump serve to pile up 14 service points with seven aces — including a nine-point run for the Scouts early in Game 1 to give the host team a commanding 12-3 lead.

“I haven’t been serving that well recently, but that’s something the whole team has been working hard on in practice, and (Wednesday) was definitely my best service match of the season,” said Streidl, who will play volleyball next fall on scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh.
Streidl wasn’t only Lake Forest player making key contributions at the service line, as senior setter Heidi Sierks also had a lengthy eight-point run in the opening game.
“We’ve been breaking down our recent matches and trying to find ways in which we can make improvements,” said Lake Forest coach Ray Werner. “And improving our serving and not giving away points in that manner is one of the areas we picked out that we needed to get better. We definitely have been improving, and it was nice to see us have a couple of long runs and have the ability to stop long runs by our opponent.”
Streidl hopes her team can continue to improve and make a long run in the upcoming state tournament.
“It’s been a great season so far and we have some big matches coming up, but everyone is working hard to get better,” she said. “This team has a lot of goals for this season, and, of course, one of them is to make it downstate. We can only do that if we keep working together”
Warren received some solid play from sophomores Stephanie Karlovics and Rachel Ziegler, but didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with the experienced Lake Forest squad.
