Matt Micucci booted an 18-yard field goal on fourth down in the second overtime period to give visiting Stevenson a 24-21 victory over Warren in a prep football game on Friday night in Gurnee.
Warren (0-4 overall, 0-2 North Suburban Lake) tied the game at 14-14 with 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter on a fourth-down, nine-yard touchdown pass from Adam Reuss to Connor Iwema, and a two-point conversion pass from Reuss to Kyle Gregory.
In the first overtime, Stevenson needed three plays to score from the 10, with Micucci hitting Matt Morrissey with a TD pass, and Micucci kicking the PAT for a 21-14 lead.
Warren answered on its third play when Reuss hooked up with Iwema for a six-yard TD. Pat Kenney’s boot made it 21-21 and forced a second extra period.
Warren went first in the second OT and on its first play, Reuss’ pass was picked off at the 4 by Dominykas Bickus.
That gave the ball to Stevenson, which ran the ball three times to the 1 before Micucci — one of the top kickers in the entire Chicago area — hit the game-winner.
For the game, Micucci was 4-of-12 passing for 130 yards, with two picks. He carried the ball 10 times for 34 yards.
The Pats’ ground game was led by Kevin Foley (26 carries, 107 yards).
For Warren, Reuss was 16-of-38 for 134 yards with three picks and the three TDs.
Davonte Wilcox rushed 27 times for 105 yards.
“This was an unbelievable high-school football game ... too bad one team had to lose,” said Stevenson coach Bill McNamara. “Our defense bent but didn’t break. I’m very proud of our defensive effort tonight.”
Regarding his ace kicker, the coach said, “We sent him out there and on fourth-and-goal and he puts it up and in. He’s been doing this for the last two years.”
