Walther Lutheran outmatched St. Edward 46-26 in Suburban Christian Gold Conference play Tuesday in Melrose Park. Patrell Green scored 17 points to lead the Broncos.
The Broncos (13-9, 7-1) were in control the entire game despite a slow start. Green dominated the game, scoring eight points in the first half.
“Our defense played well, but on offense we came out flat,” said Broncos Coach Al Lainio. “Patrell is quick. When he is on, his game there’s no one that can stop him.”
The speedy Broncos held the Green Wave (9-14, 2-6) to 10 points, taking a 19-10 lead into the half. The Green Wave couldn’t find the basket all night, shooting an abysmal 12-for-44 for the game.
The Green Wave tried to force the Broncos to the outside but the Broncos were strong on the board as well. When the Broncos missed they got the rebound.
“We knew what we had to slow it down to beat them, but we tried to run with them and we couldn’t do that,” said Green Wave coach P.J. White. “You have to give them credit, they played real tight defense. But you have to get past that if you want to win.”
Eddie O’Halloran was held to two points for the game by the tough Broncos defense. Troy Gudino and Adrian Ponce managed six points each for the game.
“Usually our offense is usually better,” said Green. “Our defense picked us up a lot. We like to spread the ball around. We are at our best when we play team ball, good defense and run up and down the court.”
Jeff Walker had 11 points for the Broncos.
