No discussion took place before the golf match between Walther Lutheran and Morgan Park Academy to agree on a tie-breaker if needed.
It turned out to be needed after both teams shot a 171 in the nonconference match on Aug. 27.
"The (Private School League) has a rule on ties," first-year Walther coach Jim Craven said. "Normally you say something before the match. We (coaches) did not think about it. There are several different ways you can break the tie. At that point we decided to leave it that way."
Walther senior Brian Sreniawski had a season-low 38 on the home course at Western Acres (Lombard). The score would have been one shot lower if not for a bogey on the last hole.
"His short game was a lot better," Craven said. "He was chipping really well."
The other three scores to count for Walther were turned in by junior Erik Desch (42), senior Luke Wilkening (44) and sophomore Trevor Nordberg (47).
"The top three are playing pretty solid golf right now," Craven said. "They are keeping the ball in the fairway."
The Broncos fell 180-197 on Aug. 25 in a nonconference match against Morton at Fresh Meadows (Hillside).
Wilkening was the low man for the Broncos with a 39. The other three to figure in the score were Sreniawski (45), Desch (46) and Nordberg (50).
Walther had a better result on Aug. 24 with a 184-206 win over Elmwood Park at the Oak Park Country Club.
"I was happy with the way we played," Craven said. "You are penalized if you hit a bad shot there."
Wilkening was the medalist for Walther with a 44.
