Monday's Proviso West roundup
This wasn't just Benet's debut at the prestigious Proviso West Holiday Tournament it was the school's debut on the main stage of Chicago high school basketball.
As good as the Redwings have been the past two seasons,
they haven't taken part in any major shootouts or tournaments, so there are a lot of fans that still don't trust their lofty No. 3 ranking.
So the pressure was on in the first round game against Von Steuben. And Benet delivered sort of. The Redwings won 60-38, but weren't overly impressive.
"We didn't play as well as we were hoping to," Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. "We seemed to be a step behind. We just didn't have the effort on things like loose balls that we usually do."
Von Steuben didn't have any answer for Benet 7-footer Frank Kaminsky, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
"We do make a real effort to try and get [Kaminsky] the ball," Heidkamp said. "We probably didn't get him the ball enough, though."
David Sobolewski led the way with 21 points and eight assists and Pat McInerney had six points and 10 rebounds for Benet (11-0).
"It's nice to get our feet wet at Proviso," Sobolewski said. "Maybe we didn't play our best game, but we played a really solid game."
Demetrius Faulkner led Von Steuben (2-4) with 13 points and Deqwon Horn added eight.
Homewood-Flossmoor 59, St. Patrick 42: The No. 8 Vikings (7-2) blitzed the Shamrocks from the arc, shooting 9-for-15 from three-point range. Tyrone Sherman (11 points) made three three-pointers, David Fatoki (14 points) had four and Delvon Rencher (12 points) hit two. Senior Julian Lewis added 13 points and five assists for H-F. Senior Jacob Williams led St. Patrick (4-5) with 16 points.
Proviso West 71, Foreman 54: The host and No. 24 Panthers (8-1) cruised behind a balanced scoring effort from Nicholas Dixon (17 points), Tyrone McDonald (14 points) and Ryan Woods (13 points). Jawaan Toney led Foreman (4-6) with 15 points and George Edwards added 12.
Proviso East 63, Hinsdale Central 62, OT: The No. 9 Pirates survived the upset bid thanks to a rebound and put-back from Sterling Brown with 1.6 seconds to play. It was Brown's only basket of the night.
"I'll take it," Proviso East coach David Chatman said. "It came just in time."
Keith Carter, Darryl Green and Michael Nicholas each scored 12 points for Proviso East (6-1). Trashaun Carroll contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
"We survived," Chatman said. "I think we were looking ahead to Morgan Park. Sometimes that happens."
Tom Garvin led Hinsdale Central (3-6) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Mike Ostojic finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Brad Anlauf added 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
