Harris leads Dunbar past Vocational

Dunbar quarterback Darvell Harris continues to show why he should be mentioned in the same category as other top quarterbacks around the state, as he led the Mightymen to a 38-26 Illini conference victory over Vocational Thursday night at Gately Stadium.

The Cavaliers led 26-22 with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter on a 6-yard run by Chris Brown. Harris put Dunbar up for good with a 3-yard run with 3:49 remaining in the third, capping an eight-play, 49-yard drive staking his team to a 30-26 lead. He then connected Jaton Dorsey for a 10-yard touchdown pass to ice the game, 38-26 with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Harris threw touchdown passes earlier of 68 and 78 yards to his brother, wide receiver Treyvon Harris, and ran two touchdowns and ran for a 19-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. He finished 8 of 12 for 223 yards and three touchdowns and had 14 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

“This was winning ugly,” said Dunbar coach Glenn Johnson. “We made way too many mistakes. Darvel showed the type of player that he is and he doesn’t have to take a back seat to anyone,” said Johnson.

Despite Harris’ efforts he was nearly upstaged by Cavalier running back Chris Brown, who scored four touchdowns on runs of 7, 23, 20, and 6. Brown gained 169 yards on 15 carries. “We had our opportunities and let one slip away,” said Chicago Vocational coach, David Underwood.
