Hubbard shaky in win

Hubbard coach Elton Harris was definitely concerned about his team's Public League Illini Prairie State game with Vocational on Thursday.

Not only was it the Greyhounds' homecoming contest, but it also came nine days prior to the squad's showdown with Morgan Park. The fears were justified as Hubbard only held a seven-point lead late in the first half and wound up settling for a 35-14 win at Gately Stadium.

"It was a tough game for us because it was our homecoming and we started off slow," Harris said. "And in the back of their minds, I know that they're thinking about the next game against Morgan Park."

The Greyhounds (6-0, 3-0) jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead following a 21-yard scoring pass from freshman Quincy Skanes (6-of-14, 89 yards) to Devonta Avery and then a five-yard touchdown run by William Taylor (17 carries, 69 yards).

Vocational (2-4, 1-2) answered with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Sam Williams (4-of-12, 95 yards) to Nathan Phillips early in the second quarter.

Right after Taylor scored on a one-yard run to make it a 21-6 game, the Cavaliers closed to within 21-14 following a 65-yard from Darius Smith (10 carries, 87 yards).

The Cavaliers looked like they might tie things up late in the second quarter but Avery intercepted a pass in his end zone. Hubbard then got a 10-yard pass from Skanes to Kevin Collins late in the first half to grab a 28-14 advantage at the break.

The Greyhounds added a four-yard touchdown run from Taylor early in the final quarter to complete the scoring.

Hubbard collected 355 yards of offense, with 228 of those coming on the ground. Vocational had 209 total yards, with only 50 gained during the second half.Kell
