Antioch defensive back Tyler Woolard intercepted his first pass of the season Friday night at Vernon Hills — and it probably will be his biggest pick of the season.

Woolard’s interception at the Sequoits’ 1-yard line with 40 seconds to play preserved Antioch’s 38-35 victory over Vernon Hills and put Antioch (7-0, 4-0) firmly in first place in the North Suburban Prairie with two games to go.

‘‘I’ve been working on deep coverage all week,’’ Woolard said. ‘‘Our defensive line rushed the quarterback [P.J. Marsek] well, and I saw myself coming down with the ball. Then I looked at the scoreboard, and we were just pumped.’’

Vernon Hills (6-1, 3-1) started its final drive at its own 27 with Antioch leading by three points. Marsek led the Cougars down to the Antioch 20 when Woolard made the interception.

Antioch trailed 21-7 at halftime before scoring twice in the third quarter and three times in the fourth. Running back Cameron White led the Sequoits with 11 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Vernon Hills’ leading receiver, DaVaris Daniels, hurt his right ankle on the Cougars’ first play from scrimmage and did not play another down. The Cougars’ leading rusher, Ernie Choi, hurt his right ankle later in the first half and sat out the entire second half.
