The goal for Trinity sophomore Amanda Nunez was to do better in her second trip to the state tennis tournament.

Nunez did just that by winning 3-of-5 matches, which was one better than the previous season.

"I thought she played very well," Trinity coach Mary Anne Lappe said. "We need to pick up some tougher meets and play in invitationals on the weekend. The invitationals are not easy to get into. That would help make her an even better player. She also needs to play a lot of tournaments (in the offseason)."

Nunez, who was unseeded after a second-place finish in the sectional, may have surprised some after starting off the tournament with three straight wins.

The first match was the quickest as Nunez won 6-0, 6-1 over Audrey Young (Glenbard West).

Nunez had to work hard in the next two rounds, coming from behind in both to post the wins.

Nunez won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round against Katie Zordani (Lake Forest) and 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 against Kristen Gobberg (Marian Central) in the third round.

The winning streak was halted in Round 4 with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Jenny Hois (Downers Grove South), who was seeded 9 through 16.

Nunez saw the season end after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Allison Murphy (Prairie Ridge) in the consolation bracket.

OPRF

The top doubles team for Oak Park-River Forest of Claire Griffin and Liz Hanley won 4-of-6 matches at the state tournament.

The tournament started on the right foot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ashley Martin and Paige Clayton (Morton).

The OPRF duo were knocked out of the championship bracket in the next round after a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Meg Bell and Sarah Delk (Wheaton North).

Griffin and Hanley rebounded to win three matches in the consolation bracket, two of which went three sets.

The closest of the three was a 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 decision over MaryClare Loughery and Jenny Velasquez (Rolling Meadows).

The end of the line for Griffin and Hanley came after a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Taylor Cook and Kelsey Delsignore (Belleville West).

FENWICK

Rachel Canfora and Chelsea Real picked up the lone win for Fenwick at the state tennis tournament.

Canfora and Real won 6-3, 6-1 over Chelsea Cross and Kylie Pickel (Mount Vernon) in the first round.

The Fenwick pair lost their next two matches in straight sets and were eliminated.

Bridget Mulhern and Katie O'Brien of Fenwick were eliminated after back-to-back straight set losses.
