It was the perfect storm of football at a rainy Homecoming Friday at Lemont.
In one corner was the undefeated Indians with a defense that allowed averages of 6 points and 45.3 yards per game in their four victories.
In the other corner was an undefeated Tinley Park team with an offense averaging 48.5 points per game in the Titans’ four wins.
Something had to give in the South Suburban Blue showdown.
No. 6 Lemont passed its stiffest test of the season, knocking off Tinley Park 49-20.
“This shows that we work on other things besides defense,” Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen said.
On Lemont’s opening drive, it marched 70 yards in six plays, capping the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run by Mike Anzalone (13 carries, 80 yards). Eight minutes later, Damon Aleman (7-for-10, 150 yards, 3 TDs) would find Tyler Jay (4 catches, 73 yards, 2 TDs) for a 21-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.
Tinley Park’s Kyle Sheridan (10-for-20, 171 yards) found Tracy Brandy for an 11-yard touchdown pass at the end of the first quarter to cut the Lemont lead in half. The Indians (5-0, 2-0) would answer right back with a 66-yard drive, capped by a 27-yard TD pass from Aleman to Jay to make it 21-7.
“We worked on a lot of pass routes in practice and my receivers were in their spots,” Aleman said.
Gregory Wallace (10 carries, 112 yards, 2 TDs) answered for the Titans with a 32-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to make it 21-13.
Aleman would score on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out to make it 28-13 at the break.
Tinley Park (4-1, 1-1) started off the second half with a bang, as Wallace scored on a 69-yard run on the second play to make it 28-20. Lemont answered, as Aleman hooked up with Erik Kirkman on a 20-yard TD pass to make it 35-20.
The Titans marched back downfield to the Indians 14-yard line, but Preston Thompson fumbled and John Tomala recovered.
After the fumble, Lemont marched 86 yards and made it 42-20 on a 4-yard touchdown run by Christos Giatras (20 carries, 167 yards, 2 TDs).
“This was a great statement game,” Giatras said. “We did our talking on the field.”
Giatras added a 39-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
