It was an evening of firsts Saturday at North Central College in Naperville.
Winnebago (25-2) was the first to score, and that was all it would need to capture its first boys soccer state championship with a 2-0 victory over Timothy Christian (18-6-1) in the first Class 1A state title game.
The Indians, who finished second in 2007 and were making their fourth consecutive state finals appearance, had numerous opportunities to score in the first half.
But as was the case throughout the postseason, the Trojans’ backline of Josh Hjelmgren, Jonathan Voss, Mike Pizzello and Taylor Slager held its own in front of goalie Peter Tameling.
‘‘For the seniors on this team, this was our last chance,’’ Tameling said. ‘‘It was a great run.’’ The Trojans’ defense finally cracked early in the second half, and Logan Fye scored twice for Winnebago.
‘‘To get to this point, it feels like the New York Giants beating New England all over again,’’ Timothy Christian’s Jake Schemper said. ‘‘Not many people gave us a chance to be here or to beat Gibault on Friday, but we did.’’
Class 2A: With a 4-1 win over Ridgewood in the Chicago Academy Sectional, Lake View (17-7-1) became the first Public League team to advance to state quarterfinal play since the IHSA eliminated the automatic bid in 2001.
Abulah Aboagye, Ruben Flores, Angel Bustamante and Julian Montiel scored for the Wildcats.
‘‘We have a good team, and the kids are playing really well right now,’’ said Lake View coach Fernando Rodriguez, whose team will play Marian Central in the Loyola University Supersectional at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Oswego (15-8-1) also earned the first quarterfinal berth in school history with a 2-1 victory over Wheaton Academy in the Rochelle Sectional. Sean Totsch’s goal in the second overtime was the difference.
