Thornwood continues unbeaten run

Thornwood remained undefeated on the season, as the Thunderbirds (90 points) moved to 8-0, defeating Marist (79) and Harvey (8) in the teams home triangular Thursday in indoor competition. The Thunderbirds pulled out a different game plan to take on the RedHawks.

"We approached this meet completely different," Thornwood coach Roy White said. "Marist not only has a lot of kids, but they are fit. You have to come back with that by filling the events with a lot of kids and I think we played it just right tonight."

Brittany Vernon led the way for Thornwood, winning the 50-yard dash (6.28 seconds) and the triple jump (28 feet, 11 inches).

"I was in four events, so I had to mentally prepare myself for everything," Vernon said. "It was a good day overall. The team did good, but we have to get better if we want to try to go to state this year."

Kayla Edwards took home a first-place finish in the 300-yard dash (41.94), Kaitlyn Hayes won the long jump (1311.50) and Ebony Stallworth dominated the shot put (382.5), winning by nearly six feet for Thornwood. The Thunderbirds also had wins in the 880-yard relay (2:03.47) and the mile relay (4:43.38).

"We like the vibe on the team this year," White said. "Everyone has been helping out each other a lot and that hasnt been the case the last couple of years. We kind of hit rock bottom and now were on our way up again."

Marist (4-3) was led by Katherine Czerpaniak, who won the mile run (6:07.22), although she was a bit winded before the meet started thanks to another hobby.

"I was a little late because I was at band practice, where I play alto saxophone," Czerpaniak said. "I was a little tired and winded, but I broke my personal record in the mile, which is my race."

Kristin Gabriel won the 60 high hurdles (9.81) and the 60 low hurdles (9.78) and Brittany Holst had wins in the high jump (410) and the pole vault (10), while Moira McDermott added a win in the two-mile (12:54.15), Bridget Enright won the 600-yard run (1:47.92), Jenni Corcoran won the 880-yard run (2:44.93) and Nicole Domel won the 440-yard dash (1:06.59) for Marist.

The RedHawks also won the two-mile relay (11:11.72).
