There wasn’t much St. Rita’s Dave Marciano didn’t do in the Mustangs’ 21-13 win over Thornton.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior returned a punt 22 yards to set up the Mustangs’ first touchdown. His 49-yard interception return led to St. Rita’s second score. And his 18-yard run on third-and-1 helped St. Rita extend its lead to 21-13 with 8:32 remaining.
Oh, and by the way, he scored all three of St. Rita’s touchdowns. But he still wasn’t satisfied.
“We should have done better,” Marciano said. “We had a good week of practice. This wasn’t the showing we wanted. We won. I’m fine with that. But I probably should have gotten 10 more yards on those returns to help our offense.”
Marciano may not have been satisfied, but his coach sure was.
“He’s been doing this all year,” St. Rita’s Todd Kuska said. “He had a great game.”
Marciano’s performance overshadowed a 32-carry, 198-yard effort by St. Rita sophomore Johwon Akui, and a 20-of-39, 221-yard passing effort by Thornton’s Darren Jones.
“The wind affected us, especially in the second half,” said Thornton coach Bill Mosel. “The wind carried the ball on us when I thought we had a chance to complete a couple of long passes. I thought we played well defensively.”
Donte Tolbert scored twice for Thornton (8-3) on a 2-yard run and 6-yard pass reception.
