TF North football preview

You might not expect a coach with just three starters back from a 2-7 team to be upbeat, but TF North's Rodney Lacy is the exception that proves the rule.

"We're looking for a winning season," Lacy said. "We're looking for the playoffs. Those are realistic goals.

"I like my odds. Obviously we have good teams (to compete against) in (SICA South co-champs) Crete and Rich East. (But) I really think we have a good shot at pushing at conference." Though the Meteors are mostly lacking in varsity experience, they are not short on talent, according to their coach.

The team's top player is its kicker and punter, Rafael Alvarado. Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State, Iowa and Kansas State are among the big-time programs recruiting the 6-3, 210-pound senior.

North's offense will build around its one returning starter: JaMarcus Higgenbottom, a 6-5, 280-pound left tackle who is being recruited by the likes of Western Michigan, Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois.

At the other end of the size spectrum is the Meteors' starting tailback, 5-2, 140-pound sophomore Braxton Dupree. Also expected to be among the offensive difference makers are junior receiver Katrell Sykes (5-11, 160), who runs a 4.5 40, according to Lacy; senior receiver Brandal Miles (5-9, 160); and quarterback Jeremiah Barnes. On the sophomore team last year, Barnes threw for 19 touchdowns -- 11 of them to Sykes.

Junior Elijah Sosowora (5-11, 160) also is in the mix for North, which is employing a spread offense. The starters back on defense are senior linebacker Chris Williams (6-0, 230) and Miles at free safety.
