RECORD FOR LENTI
Mount Carmel football coach Frank Lenti will tie Gary Korhonen’s state record for career wins if the Caravan beats De La Salle tonight at Gately Stadium. Lenti is 305-54 in 28 seasons, all with Mount Carmel. Korhonen was 306-91 in 36 seasons at Richards from 1972 to 2007. Counting two seasons as a head coach in Iowa, Korhonen was 315-98 in 38 years.
WATCH THE MUSTANGS
Charles Matthews, one of the highly-regarded players in the freshmen class, is enrolled at St. Rita. The 6-3 guard played with Young this summer and was expected to attend the Chicago Public League power this year, but Matthews is enrolled and attending St. Rita. According to recruiting analyst Joe Henricksen, Matthews is arguably one of the top three prospects in the 2015 class. Coach Gary DeCesare’s Mustangs now have a nice collection of veteran talent and young, up-and-coming players in the program. Among the young players in the program is Matthews’ brother, Dominique, a talented sophomore guard who started last season as a freshman, along with 6-5 sophomore Vic Law. St. Rita will also welcome back a healthy A.J. Avery, a 6-7 senior who missed the majority of last season with an injury, and senior guard Tony Hicks.
TAKEBACKS
The recruitment of Proviso East’s standout guard Keith Carter is back open. The 6-0 senior, who was a part of the flurry of commitments Loyola and coach Porter Moser received in August, has opened up his recruitment. “We rushed the process a little bit,” said Keith Carter’s father, Keith Carter, Sr. “I think I rushed the process. I wanted to get the pressure off of him, let him relax and just play basketball. But he has no problem with the process. Now we just want what is best for him.” And Loyola still may be the best spot for Carter, according to his dad, who says no visits are currenty set up for any other school.
BELL TO BRADLEY
Bradley was able to tap into Chicago area recruiting as first-year coach Geno Ford secured a commitment from Oak Park’s Ka’Darryl Bell, a highly-athletic point guard.
“Basically, they sat me down and showed me what they envisioned for me,” says Bell. “They needed a point guard, wanted a point guard in my class and believe that I can come in and play right away. I liked the campus, the coaches, the school and the players.” Bell averaged 15 points a game and was an all-conference selection in the West Suburban Silver as a junior. The Bradley program has just one Chicago area player, former Julian star Walter Lemon, who had a solid freshman campaign last season.
