Jahwon Akui's legs wouldn't stop.
The 5-foot-7St. Rita running back ran for 146 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns as second-ranked St. Rita defeated Bishop McNamara 41-21 in a Chicago Catholic League cross over matchup.
Late in the second half, Bishop McNamara backed up St. Rita at its own 1-yard line with a punt. But Akui would bombard the Fighting Irish defense with explosive bursts up the middle and cap off a 99-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs ahead 21-7 before the half.
"That was huge," said St. Rita head coach Todd Kuska. "We take a lot of pride in that and you take away any momentum that other team has with a drive like that."
Bishop McNamara was without star running back Maurice Shoemaker who tore his ACL and MCL last week against against Leo. He will miss the rest of the season.
The Mustangs reinforced their position at the top of the CCL Blue Division in front of a cheerful Homecoming crowd. Members of the famed 1970 St. Rita team that won the Catholic League and City championship celebrated their 40th anniversary with a pre game ceremony.
"We wanted to win tonight for those guys," Akui said. "They mean a lot to us and the program."
Mustangs quarterback Brandon Johnson threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 43 yards and a touchdown. Running back Travis Starks also added to the running onslaught with 126 yards rushing.
