Jason Markus certainly misses not having Andrew McAuliffe around as the 6-8 junior center recovers from a leg injury.

“He’s most of our offense, our defense, he’s everything,” the junior Glenbrook North guard said. “We have to find more offense from everybody with him gone.”

Markus certainly relished the chance of taking on a greater offensive role.

Markus drilled six three-pointers on 7 of 7 shooting and scored 20 of his 21 points in the first half as the Spartans routed St. Patrick 60-34 in first-round play at the Proviso West Holiday tournament Tuesday.

The Spartans (9-1) advance to play Morgan Park in the quarterfinals.

Markus’ shooting was so accurate he punctuated his remarkable day by banking a three-pointer from the left wing. “That’s when it really started to get crazy out there,” he said.

Glenbrook North ran out to a 9-0 start and never looked back. Markus made three consecutive three-pointers as Glenbrook North raced out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. He was just getting started, scored a stunning 20 points in the game‘s opening 10 minutes in propelling Glenbrook North to a 30-13 lead.

“We did a good job of skipping the ball and my teammates really looked for me,” he said.

Behind Markus, the Spartans shot a blistering 66 percent (25-38). Mark Johnson was nearly equally efficient, shooting 6-7 from the field in adding 12 points and six rebounds for Glenbrook North. The Spartans led 41-18 at the break.

The Spartans recorded assists of 19 of their 25 baskets. Adam Chick and Jan Siegien scored eight points each.

Royale Ewing scored eight points to lead the Shamrocks (4-5).

“We caused some early turnovers, and that gave us a chance to get out and score,” Glenbrook North coach Dave Weber said. “We’re a bit confusing right now, because we struggled right after making the adjustment without Andrew, when we were mostly an inside team and now we’re doing it from the perimeter.”

Markus said he once hit nine three-pointers in a game as a freshman. This was uncharted territory.

“He had his first three-point attempt of the year against Hales blocked, and sometimes that can make somebody tentative.

“Today he was in rhythm and really shot the ball with confidence,” Weber said.
