Hales makes it two in a row

Junior quarterback Christopher Walker knows Hales Franciscan

hasn't enjoyed a whole lot of success through the years.

He still believed in the team this season.

A week after ending a 16-game losing streak, Hales extended its winning

streak to two games by beating St. Joseph 30-14 Saturday in Westchester.

"It's very exciting," Walker said. "I felt real confident about our team

this year. I was kind of bummed out that we lost our first three games. We

came back ready and prepared the last two weeks. I told the team since the

beginning of the season that all we need is that first win and then our

confidence level is going to be out the roof."

Hales improved to 2-3 in the Chicago Catholic League White Division

with the win and extended the losing streak of St. Joseph (0-5, 0-4) to 13

games.

Walker completed 11 of 19 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and also

rushed for 61 yards on eight carries and had TD runs of 11 and 50 yards.

"Everything I did came from my line, my front five," Walker said of Jordan

Watson, Devante Edwards, Ian Barnes, Demetrius Carter and Jordan Tibbs. "It

was tremendous how they were blocking. I got touchdowns untouched because

they were opening up holes like the red sea."

The Spartans led 14-0 after one quarter thanks to a 15-yard touchdown catch

by Antone Simmons from Walker and an 11-yard TD run by Walker.

St. Joseph pulled within 14-7 on a one-yard TD run by quarterback Demetrius

Carr with 10 minutes, 58 seconds left in the second quarter, but the

Spartans quickly answered when Willie Allen (five catches, 120 yards) caught a

65-yard TD pass from Walker, who ran in the conversion to stretch the lead

to 22-7.

Carr, who threw for 105 yards, added another one-yard touchdown run with 5:53 left in

the third quarter to make the score 22-14, but the Chargers could get no

closer.

Walker closed the game's scoring with a 50-yard TD run with 8:21 left in the

contest.

St. Joseph junior running back Darian James gained 100 yards on 14 carries,

but had to leave the game with an injury late in the third quarter. Raul

Garcia rushed for 41 yards on 10 carries as James' replacement.
