Reggie Jennings scored three touchdowns and ran 10 times for 85 yards as Nazareth had a happy homecoming with a 48-7 victory over St. Joseph in an East Suburban Catholic clash Saturday afternoon.
Jennings got more of the work because Nazareth (7-1, 5-1) played without running back LaSteven McKinney and had running back Mike Williams go out after two plays. Both have ankle injuries.
"My mind-set was to keep running hard for my team to get a victory," Jennings said. "The offensive line did a great job and this shows our depth. Now we just have to stay hungry and keep going into the second season."
In the first half, Jennings scored on a 1-yard run, Alan Fredian added a 2-yard run and Patrick Dunn had second-quarter field goals of 40 and 32 yards to give the Roadrunners a 20-0 halftime lead.
Mark O'Connor had a 29-yard touchdown reception from Adam Marske (14-of-21 for 233 yards) in the third quarter that was sandwiched in between TD runs of 52 and 13 yards by Jennings. Nazareth's Jason Tosheff capped the scoring on a 33-yard scamper with 39.4 seconds to play in the game.
St. Joseph (2-6, 0-6), which lost its sixth straight, scored in the third quarter when Tim Kelly rambled in from a yard out to cut the lead to 27-7. The TD was set up by a 79-yard pass from Cameron Meredith (14-of-26, 243 yards, two interceptions) to Anthony Boddy, who had three receptions for 139 yards.
"We were going in banged up," Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. "But today was an opportunity, especially for some seniors, to step up. Our guys will be healthy, I just don't know when."
