Hinsdale Central freshman Riley Glenn wasn't expecting to make the varsity when tryouts began Feb. 28. After all, her family booked a spring break vacation for later this month.
But Glenn earned a shutout in her varsity debut as the Devils defeated St. Ignatius 1-0 Thursday in their season opener in Hinsdale.Senior Mallory Feinstein scored the game's only goal with 46:30 remaining in the second half when her right-footed shot hit the upper left corner of the goal.
"We have good trust," Feinstein said. "We've never seen [Glenn] play. This was her first varsity game. [The goal] was good because it got us a cushion. It was good that it took pressure off her."
Glenn made five saves against St. Ignatius (0-1-1).Glenn will miss three games later this month when spring break begins March 28. Her backup, Emily Brosius, is also a freshman. Hinsdale Central's only returning keeper, sophomore Cathryn Knoch, is recovering from a back injury.
"It was really exciting. I'm glad it happened," Glenn said. "It's a faster pace than I'm used to. I had no idea what to expect."
Glenn said assistant coach Harrison Bull, who is in his 27th season, had some words of encouragement for her before the game began.
Feinstein felt good about her goal considering fellow senior forward Eryka Hawkins scored last season's first goal.
"We flip-flopped this year," Feinstein said.
"It's always good to win the first one," Hinsdale Central coach Skip Begley said. "We had a freshman in goal and she was very solid. She was very composed."
The four defenders in front of Glenn were slightly more experienced. Jaclyn Gutman is a junior with sophomores Casey May and Jenn Jarmy, and freshman Meghan Schick.
St. Ignatius, which started five of seven freshmen on the team, will play its third game in the first week of the season at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against Lyons.
"We experienced a big learning curve. The improvements we have made in two days [since tying Trinity] have been large," Wolfpack coach Rob Stassen said. "We made one error and they got a strike from the girl that made us pay."
