Boys Basketball: Senior-led St Ignatius squad stops Brother Rice

Updated: February 7, 2012 10:09PM

With five seniors on the floor, St. Ignatius weathered every Brother Rice run on its way to a 59-51 victory at St. Ignatius Tuesday night.

“We have lots of experience and we know how close out games,” said Brian Howard, who scored 13 points.

With the scored tied at nine with two left in the first quarter, the Wolfpack (18-3) spurted an 18-5 run in the final 10 minutes to take a 27-14 halftime lead. The Crusaders drew to within six at 33-27 on a basket by Alex Majewski with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. But St. Ignatius was able to pull away by converting 15 of 20 free throws to keep the crusaders at arms length.

“Making free throws is how you win games,’’ said Jack Crepeau, who led all scorers with 16 points and made 6 of 6 in the final quarter.

St. Ignatius also received help from Peter Ryckbosh and Marty McClure, both of whom had 10 points. Brother Rice (13-9) was led by Garrett O’Neill’s 15 points with 13 coming in the fourth quarter. Majewski added 13 for the visitors.

“They’re a dangerous shooting team, but we locked down in the first half,’’ St. Ignatius coach Rich Kehoe said. When Ryckbosh got into foul trouble, we got some help from other players who stepped up.’’
