Some may think Morton is the favorite to win the Class 3A St. Ignatius Sectional with a 23-2-2 record, but don’t tell that to Mustangs star Daniel Ortiz.

Despite cruising to the Young Regional title with a 5-1 victory over St. Ignatius (11-7-2) Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ortiz realizes a lot of people continue to doubt his team.

“We’re the underdogs,” Ortiz said. “No one thinks we are going to win. St. Ignatius said they were going to play who they have to play. No one thinks we’re favored at all.”

Ortiz found the back of the net twice, as the Mustangs raced out to a quick lead en route to securing a Tuesday sectional matchup with Oak Park.

“The kids came out with the right attitude today,” Morton coach Mike Caruso said. “We got on them early, and we played our game. If we play our game and possess the ball, we’re going to be all right.”
