Zion-Benton scored an early touchdown, but Stevenson bounced back nicely, scoring the game’s final 31 points in a 31-7 victory in Lincolnshire on Friday in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division opener for both teams.

The Patriots (2-1) used a strong running game and stingy defense to foil the Zee-Bees’ upset hopes.

Zion scored on Matt Cortesi’s two-yard run on a fake field goal. He was the holder.

Jordan Lynch’s fumble recovery started what turned out to be a 60-yard scoring drive.

From after that, it was all Stevenson.

Christopher Peters (16 carries, 93 yards, two touchdowns) tallied on a one-yard run and Matt Micucci (2-for-6, 35 yards, touchdown) threw a 33-yard TD pass to Troy Radtke to give Stevenson a 14-7 halftime lead.

After the break, Peters scored from the 1, Micucci kicked a 36-yard field goal, and Mike Ling (8 carries, 73 yards, touchdown) scored on a 32-yard burst to complete the scoring.

“It’s a four-quarter game and our team was very resilient tonight,” said Patriots coach Bill McNamara.

He liked the work done by Peters against a tough defense.

“He ran hard every time he touched the ball,” the coach said. “He has good vision and ran effectively.”

Zion’s offense never got going after the early score.

Star running back Alex Pasiewicz (16 carries, 43 yards) never got loose and QB Javairius Amos-Mays was 12-of-20 throwing for 81 yards with 2 picks.
