Stevenson wide receiver Henry Wood celebrated his birthday in fine fashion, hauling in a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zachary Wujcik with 1:41 left that led Stevenson to a 24-17 win Friday over host Lake Zurich.
But no one had a finer day than fellow Patriots wideout Michael Bilton, who had 306 total yards and two touchdowns. Bilton scored on a 94-yard kickoff return and also grabbed a six-yard pass that bounced off a Lake Zurich defender.
‘‘The Mikey Magic is what I like to call it,’’ Wood said. ‘‘He always comes up with the big plays.’’
The game was tied at 17 early in the fourth quarter, and overtime seemed likely when the No. 22 Bears (2-2, 1-1 NSC Lake) stuffed the Patriots (2-2, 2-0) on a goal-line stand with 5:30 left.
But Stevenson’s Scott Diamond intercepted a pass from Lake Zurich’s Tanner Witt at the Patriots’ 44-yard line with two minutes left, setting the table for Wujcik’s game-winning strike to Wood. Wujcik was 18-for-33 for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
