The only pass reception in the game for Devonte Duerson turned out to be very important, to say the least.

The Proviso East senior hauled in what turned out to be the game winning touchdown in a 20-14 decision on Saturday over Steinmetz (6-4) in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs in Maywood.

Proviso East (8-2) quarterback William Crowder connected with Duerson on a 24-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone with 8:41 to play to break a 14-14 tie.

"He threw it up in the air and I grabbed it," Duerson said.

The Silver Streaks had tied the game 29 seconds earlier on a 1-yard run by Chris Dotson. The two-point conversion attempt by Steinmetz was no good.

"Steinmetz came out here to win," said Proviso East coach Aaron Peppers after having two partially filled water coolers dumped over his head. "I'm just glad we have an opportunity to play again."

Steinmetz went up 8-0 with 4:56 to play in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Sam Valdovinos and a two-point conversion run by Dotson. Proviso East answered on its next possession with a 40-yard TD pass from Crowder to Corey Cooper. Crowder ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8 with 3:19 to play until halftime.

The Pirates took their first lead of the afternoon on a 2-yard run by Crowder with 1:54 left in the third quarter to go up 14-6 after the two-point conversion failed.
