St Charles North downs Elgin for first win

It was a situation that called for a relief pitcher.
With his offense sputtering, St. Charles North football coach Mark Gould decided on two things at halftime Friday night. He inserted Ryan Fischbach at quarterback and made sure tailback George Edlund was handed the football.
Both worked to perfection and the North Stars ended a five-game losing streak by defeating visiting Elgin 37-13.
Fischbach (4-of-6, 84 yards) threw second half touchdown passes of 18 and 20 yards to spurt St. Charles North from a 9-7 halftime lead to the romp.
“I just felt we needed something to give us a shot in the arm and it worked out that way,” Gould said.
Edlund was a total workhorse. He carried the ball 39 times for 284 yards and TD jaunts of 2, 42 and 39 yards and the North Stars (1-5, 1-2 Upstate Eight River) needed every bit of his hard work.
“We rode him (and) it was working,” Gould said. “The line was blocking, the lead blocker was blocking and he’s one of those guys who gets stronger as the game goes on.”
Elgin (1-5, 0-4) lost its fifth straight game but had a chance to grab the momentum in the second quarter but had one drive stopped at the St. Charles North 20 and two others snuffed at the North Stars 15.
“Penalties contributed to some of that,” Elgin coach Dave Bierman said. “It was hard to overcome. It’s just consistency.”
Elgin did come up with three outstanding plays. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Sitter teamed up with Gage Teschner on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, wide receiver Devin Gilliam made a diving, one-handed catch for a 25-yard gain and Dennis Moore returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown.
