Stagg and Lincoln-Way East have a date Saturday morning for the Class 3A Andrew Sectional championship. Lincoln-Way East defeated Eisenhower 1-0 and Stagg knocked off Lincoln-Way Central 2-0 in the sectional semifinals Tuesday to set up the matchup.

Lincoln-Way East (9-10-5) and Eisenhower (16-7-2) met once in the regular season and zero goals were scored. The story was the same through the first 79 minutes of Tuesday’s showdown until Michael Roth’s free kick from 65 yards out flew toward the box in the final minute.

The Griffins’ Logan Murphy headed the ball to teammate Josh Lavin, who headed it toward William Will. Will ripped a shot in the box that hit the left post and trickled into the goal with 6.2 seconds remaining in regulation.

“It touched three white jerseys before it got to me, so it was a total team effort,” Will said. “It felt great.”

In the second semifinal, Stagg led 2-0 with 9:45 remaining in the second half before the game was stopped due to lightning.

After luring the Lincoln-Way Central goalie left of the net, Pantelis Papadimitriou found Roberto Torres directly in front of the net and Torres converted top shelf to put Stagg (18-2-2) ahead 1-0 two minutes into the second half.

With 10:36 remaining in the game, Conrad Polinski sent a blast far post from 35 yards out that curved into the net to give the Chargers a 2-0 advantage.

Since games cannot be played after 10 p.m. and 30 minutes must be taken each time an official sees lighting, the game was called a after a delay of 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Lincoln-Way Central finished the season 18-6-1.
