Baggett's five scores beat South Shore

After a tough loss last week against King, Terry Baggett and his Whitney Young teammates knew they had to do a better job playing from start to finish to win games.

Baggett and the Dolphins did just that on Friday in a 49-0 win over South Shore at Rockne as the senior carried the ball 18 times for 203 yards and five touchdowns. Baggett played tailback and quarterback for Young (1-1) and gave the Tars' defense fits.

After a slow start that saw his first six carries total -1 rushing yards, Baggett got in a groove by finishing a seven-play first-quarter drive with a 21-yard touchdown run that put the Dolphins up 7-0.

"The difference between the first couple carries was I was tip-toeing to the line," Baggett said. "Coach (Franken) just told me to go out there and run as fast as I can and I started hitting the hole at full speed."

Baggett was tough for South Shore to stop, taking carries from the I-formation as a tailback and also lining up at quarterback in the shotgun. He gained 204 yards over his final 12 carries before leaving the game after his fifth touchdown late in the third quarter.

"I'm more comfortable playing the tailback than the quarterback," Baggett said. "On plays where I'm the tailback I can get the ball and go instead of being the quarterback and having to call the play."

South Shore (0-2) did their best to stay in the game and only trailed 7-0 after the first quarter, but penalties, two turnovers and two loss-of-downs killed any momentum the Tars had.

Young scored three touchdowns, including a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown by Malcolm Tucker, off of South Shore turnovers and loss of downs. The Dolphins also sacked South Shore quarterback Dwyane Austin four times.

"We try to capitalize on what our defense does," Baggett said. "Those turnovers led to great field position for us."

Baggett also scored on runs of nine, 32 and 53 yards. Barrett Morrissette had four carries for 51 yards and a 40-yard touchdown run as well for the Dolphins.

Austin led South Shore (2-0) with 72 yards rushing on 13 carries while also going 4-for-10 for 55 yards through the air.
