South Central rallies to win title

“We knew we were going to win,” said South Central junior Alex Snyder.
And Snyder was in the middle of a wild Satellites’ comeback, driving in two runs with a double, and scoring another, in a six-run seventh inning that gave her team a 7-1 victory over Triton.
Freshman Madisyn Walter didn’t quite have that much confidence when she came into the game in relief in the fifth, and the Trojans did get a couple hits off her and scored a run.
“I was scared,” she admitted.
But Walter settled down, and with another freshman, Caitlin Tucker behind the plate, the tandem got a strikeout to end the inning. South Central coach Rich Patterson knew his team would eventually get to Triton freshman Mallorie Jennings.
“The girls weren’t used to that (slower) speed.” said Patterson of Jennings’ slower delivery. “She’s going to be an excellent pitcher, but I knew it was a matter seeing her enough times. At that speed it was tough. They had the momentum for them.
“We ignited,” Peterson said of his team’s seventh inning outburst.
The Satellites (18-11) scored a run in the sixth to make in 4-l. In the seventh, senior Katie Bekavac started off with the first of five singles. Then with Snyder’s two RBI, Kali Young added a double that drove in another. Finally, sophomore Samantha Jackson picked up two more RBI on a drive that bounced off the Trojans’ centerfielder for a double.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Brittany Wright caught two high fly balls in left field, and Walter split those two outs with a strikeout.
“I just had adrenaline,” Wright said of her team’s rally. “I was spiked!”
Senior Jessica Sturdy started the game, tossing three solid innings, allowed just one hit and a walk. But Patterson decided to take her out in favor of Haley Bauer after she walked the first batter in the fourth.
“I might of pulled her two quick,” Patterson admitted. But though Bauer allowed a double for Triton’s first score, and was responsible for the other three runs, it all came out well with Walter’s superb relief.
